Akin moved into NY on the back of its funds practice thinking that between oil and gas and funds it could play with real NY firms. It can't. If you want to work in Texas, work at Akin, if you want to work in NY, work at a real NY firm.

Overall great firm....people, work, and pay.

The firm has done a generally good job navigating the financial crisis. The decision to unfreeze raises gave a boost to morale. Mentoring is good here. Hours can be demanding.

There are some downsides to working at a big law firm but I have no complaints about Akin in particular. The work can sometimes be downright boring, though that's to be expected really. The partners I've worked with are nice people and will actually take a few minutes to explain a project, unlike the experience that many of my friends have at other firms.
