Make it easier for women who want famlies.
I think a REAL system needs to be in place to allow women to take a year or two off and work part time and then rejoin the firm. It is crazy that you have to choose the firm or your family.

You can't have everything. If you have two people, regardless of their sex, and one takes four years off and the other doesn't, all things being equal, who will be a better attorney?
Not complicated! If a father stays home for four years it will be tough for him to re-enter the market in the same way it would be for a woman. People have to make tough choices in life. Not everyone needs to make $250 k a year at a big law firm.
I do not feel sorry for you. I wish I could get a few years off myself.

Allen Overy has come up with a solution. Four-day week / 52 days off annually (choose one) and with reduced hours comes reduced partnership profits. Brilliant.

A&O has a policy and that is all it is - it's written on paper and and looks good in "The Lawyer". A day off carrying your blackberry and "available for conference calls" is not a day off. Plus, as a partner, you are only allowed a maximum of 6 months maternity leave. You may as well just work the 5-7 days and get paid for it - properly.
